The Epistle of James had a difficult time getting into the New Testament canon, and Luther called it a “right strawy epistle”, but it is an amazing composition, often feeling like a sermon on various topics of concern. Famous for the claim that “faith without works is dead,” James is sometimes seen to be in opposition to Paul, but that is probably a misinterpretation. James has been an important player in the development of the church’s doctrine over the years. It displays strong influence of the wisdom tradition, and has many parallels to the gospel of Matthew. Please join us for a prayerful study of this wonderful epistle, written by the brother of our Lord, James, the leader of the early church in Jerusalem.
